When you first brought Charlie home, you imagined taking him everywhere with you - to the coffee shop to sit by your feet while you worked, quiet walks in the park in the fresh morning air… but your dreams were crushed when you realized that Charlie couldn’t go anywhere without barking his sweet little head off at every person, dog and squirrel he saw. You cringe every time you think about that one time when he chased that stroller and wouldn’t stop barking at the crying baby.
With over 40 years as a Dog Breeder and an Obedience Trainer, I have an extensive knowledge of how a puppy develops and can see canine behavior long before the owner does. Unlike other trainers who use food and treats to motivate good behaviour, I teach dog owners how to be the pack leader. Dogs get the concept right away because they come from a wolf pack mentality. When you are the pack leader, your dog will want to behave well for you - out of love and respect. I love seeing owners not just have a dog, but have their best friend.
How it all beganI grew up on a country property outside of London, Ontario. My mother bred Dobermans and my sister showed horses. Every day was filled with caring for animals. After watching the Walt Disney movie “The Incredible Journey” as a teen, I fell in love with Bull Terriers.
At that time I was showing my mother's Dobermans. I can remember announcing to her that I wanted my own show dog and asked for a Bull Terrier. My first Bull Terrier was Sheba, and at the age of 14 I took a class on obedience training and was invited to be the teacher’s assistant. Soon after, I started competing in obedience and show handling. It wasn't until almost twenty years later that I started my own kennel called Bull Lovers showing Bull Terriers and quickly became one of the top breeders in the country. I have bred over forty Canadian and International champions including the top winning Canadian bred Bull Terrier of all time. I retired from breeding in 2015, ending a successful 25 year career during which my Bull Terriers starred in the "#15" video with Don Cherry, been on stage, on TV, featured in calendars and even used as models for sculptures. I started my own obedience school 20 years ago and I have been teaching dog owners to train their dogs ever since. Over the years, I have earned many awards for dog training, including "Best Pet Trainer" in Northumberland County four years in a row! |
Today
I am the proud owner of My Bark Avenue Academy where I offer an Adult and Puppy Bootcamp program, Private Lessons and teach Beginner and Intermediate level Obedience classes.
When an owner has a huge smile on their face and says “That is not the dog I arrived with” or “I feel like I have a brand new dog!”, that’s when I know I’ve made a difference. That’s what makes me happy because that is why I do what I do.
My goal is for owners to not only have a dog but a well mannered member of the family that is a joy to take anywhere with them because they are so well behaved. I want your relatives and friends to say “Hey, please bring Charlie with ya!”
